Bernardo is a representation of the semi-heteronymous of Fernando Pessoa, Bernardo Soares. His characterization like the animal fly starts from a quotation of the The Book of Disquiet in which he observes a fly, he feels like a fly, he dreams like he is a fly.
However, this analogy is more underlying because there are many common characteristics between them. Like the fly, Bernardo lives inside a society, but he doesn’t live in society, he only observes it and dreams about it. Just like the fly, this dreamer proves to be small and fragile, but with a huge ability to fly, to rise higher than humans through the dream, creating an antinomy in his self-esteem due to sometimes he considers himself God and other times no more than a mere animal, a mere insect almost to be crushed.
